What a year it was in TML Land!
After 2 years of playing 5
seasons a year, we discovered a Web site that had Diamond Mind seasons in the
public domain going back to the 1870’s.
The Retro Division decided to bite off a little more and to also
experiment by playing 1926. The
experiment was in the operation. First
off all, the league is going backwards so Ty Cobb gets younger every year. Secondly, we are playing each season in a
little more than a month. Thirdly, we
are drafting the next season while playing the current season. Since December 1st we have
finished 1926, drafted and started 1925 and have just finished the 1924 rookie
draft. 1925 will end on February 5th
and 1924 will start on February 6th. The 1923 rookie draft will also start that day.
There is an unbroken chain of
seasons available going back to 1917.
If we continue on our current pace, Babe Ruth will end the year as a
pitcher and will probably be challenging Barry Bonds for the alltime homerun
lead in the TML!
The numbers are fascinating to
me.
When Larry, Mike and I started
the TML back in 1979, one of the conscious decisions we made was to try our
best to maintain lifetime statistics.
All of us had been in leagues that began reconstructing their history
after a few years had been played. Now,
of course, we had a technological advantage.
Where things were tracked on index cards before, Mike Landin started
storing data on a main frame and eventually gravitated everything to a TRS-80,
then Apple II e, then a Mac and eventually into the Dos world. If you remember (and based on the above, a
lot of you do!), we put out a TML Register after the 1986 season.
Stats have always been our
passion.
When the TML broke into 2, we
were so fortunate to have Kevin Powers shoulder the stat load for 5 years. Kevin’s work was invaluable as you all
know. He got all of the data from
Mike. We had to reconstruct all of 1994
as it was a mess. Everything else was
fine and Kevin set to work using Excel and writing macros to accumulate totals. I don’t think that I could ever praise Kevin
and his work too much!
When Kevin left, frankly, I had no idea how I was
going to be able to continue what he had done.
The fortunate part was the change from Diamond Dreams to Diamond
Mind. I remember Roy Gorham telling me
when we were contemplating the switch that Diamond Mind was essentially a
database and he was absolutely correct.
You use the report function to export data and bring it into whatever
database you are using. When Kevin left
I was in the process of learning Access for my job. Around Thanksgiving of 2000 I started to put together the
database with the help of my nephew Tim.
Now, 4 years later, it has grown to biblical proportions. However, it works like a charm. Importing new data and then producing all
time leaders lists has never been easier.
Over the course of the last couple weeks, I have
designed a register format using Crystal Reports (outputting to a pdf file)
where I can produce all the players for any given time for any team or
manager.
If you would like to get the lifetime leaders and/or
your team in register format, let me know and I will be glad to eMail it to
you.
The highlight of 2004 was the TML get together in
Pittsburgh.
It sprung from the fertile brain of Dave Pittner as
a way to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Mike Ameen then took the initiative and carried the ball right up
until the Convention. Softball managing
interfered with Mike getting to Pittsburgh, but we all benefited from his work.
TML managers Dave Yamin, Willie Jelks, Jim
Schembari, George Mowry, Pat Barry, Scott Lagace, Larry Alber, Dave Pittner as
well as former TML managers Chris Klug, Roy Gorham, Kevin Powers as well as
friends and siblings descended on the Holiday Inn for a great weekend.
It would be hard to put a highlight on the weekend,
but we saw 3 great games between the Pirates and Cubs. The first two were in the Friday
doubleheader which we walked up and got great seats for. The doubleheader was voted the 9th
best “game” of the year as Rob Mackowiak stole the show. Did you know that Jack Wilson is on Buffalo? We fell in love with PNC Park. What a great place to watch a ballgame!
Saturday had a lot of games played in the TML Room
including both the 1930 and 1940 World Series matchups between Willie Jelks’
Wild Weasels and the New York Woodchoppers.
Mike had set it up with his uncle, Steve Blass, to
come over and spend a little time with us.
He was expected around noon. At
around 12:30. he hadn’t shown up and so we adjourned the banquet room where the
TML buffet had been set up. A lot of
war stories were exchanged and we had a lot of laughs. I still think that Dave Yamin’s deadline
story was my favorite. We were all
disappointed because we left the luncheon at 1:30 and Uncle Steve had not
shown. Oh well. A bunch of us went back to the TML room to
talk and play games. Suddenly someone
popped their head in and asked if the Baseball guys were around. It was Steve Blass. We all scrambled to get everyone to the
room.
Steve spent an hour with us telling stories and
trading opinions. It was worth the
wait! To those who were there, two
words – Vic Davalillo! Steve was so
gracious and outgoing that we almost asked him to join the league!
Pittsburgh was wonderful and the memories have not
faded. There is a movement afoot to do
it again very soon. We will keep you
posted.
So the TML year of 2004 was a great one. 2005 will be even better.
I thank all of you for your help and mostly for your
friendship, understanding and patience.
It has been a magnificent 25 years and I wouldn’t trade a second of any
of them. It is so good to have friends
and even better to have friends like you.
